Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans, according to BBC Sport. The move comes just days after the club confirmed the £48m signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
Why United Need Tielemans
Manchester United’s midfield has been a problem area this summer. Following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s knee injury, Kobbie Mainoo became the club’s only experienced central midfielder.
United also missed out on other targets. Elliot Anderson chose Manchester City instead, while Mateus Fernandes opted for Tottenham Hotspur over a move from West Ham.
The 29-year-old Belgian would bring immediate experience and quality to a midfield that badly needs reinforcement before the new season starts.
What Makes the Deal Possible
BBC Sport reports that Tielemans’ Aston Villa contract contains a release clause. This simplifies negotiations and means United do not need to negotiate a fee directly with Villa.
Tielemans has been on United’s radar for a long time. The release clause has given the club a clear path to completing a deal that has been months in the making.
Tielemans’ Career So Far
Tielemans moved to England in 2019 when he joined Leicester City from Monaco. He became a fan favourite at the King Power Stadium, most memorably scoring the winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea.
He joined Aston Villa on a free transfer in 2023 after Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League. At Villa, he established himself as a key player under Unai Emery and helped the club reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
On the international stage, Tielemans was a key figure in Belgium’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals this summer. However, he was forced to pull out of the 2-1 defeat by Spain after suffering an injury in the warm-up.
The Ederson Deal Collapses
While the Santos signing and Tielemans pursuit bring optimism, United’s move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson has fallen through. The 27-year-old Brazilian had a full medical after initial tests flagged a knee concern.
Specialists were involved in the assessment, and the outcome led to United backing out of the £35m deal. However, sources say the transfer could be revisited later in the summer depending on how the window develops.
United officials say they are sympathetic to the player but must act in the club’s best interests. The club has stressed that the Santos signing was not triggered by the Ederson situation.
What This Means for United’s Midfield
If the Tielemans deal goes through, United will have significantly strengthened their midfield options. Santos, 22, brings youth and technical quality, while Tielemans offers experience and proven Premier League pedigree.
Michael Carrick’s squad will have a much more balanced midfield heading into pre-season, which begins against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July.
What to Watch
The Tielemans deal is expected to be completed soon. Once confirmed, it will give Carrick the midfield depth he needs to compete on multiple fronts next season. United fans will hope the Belgian’s arrival signals the end of a frustrating transfer saga and the start of a stronger, more competitive squad.
