Match-by-Match Preview

Canada vs Morocco

This is a historic occasion for Canada. The co-hosts reached the last 16 for the first time in their history after Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time winner against South Africa in the group stage. Jonathan David has been their star man with three goals so far.

Morocco, meanwhile, are looking to repeat their fairytale run from 2022. The Atlas Lions beat the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32 after a dramatic 1-1 draw. Ismael Saibari has been their top scorer with three goals.

This is a clash between two teams who have exceeded expectations. Morocco are slight favourites, but the Houston crowd will be firmly behind Canada.

Paraguay vs France

Paraguay have been one of the stories of the tournament. They stunned Germany in the group stage and have shown they can compete with anyone. Julio Enciso has been their creative spark in midfield.

France, however, are a different beast. Kylian Mbappé has been sensational with six goals in the tournament so far, and Les Bleus have won every match they have played. They are heavy favourites here, but Paraguay have already proven they should not be underestimated.

Brazil vs Norway

This is a blockbuster tie. Brazil needed a dramatic 96th-minute goal from Gabriel Martinelli to beat Japan in the Round of 32, showing both their vulnerability and their fighting spirit.

Norway are in the last 16 for the first time since 1998, and Erling Haaland has been the man driving them forward. His winner against Ivory Coast sent Norway through, and he will fancy his chances against a Brazilian defence that has looked shaky at times.

Mexico vs England

The atmosphere at the Azteca will be electric. Mexico have been imperious at home — four wins, eight goals scored, zero conceded in the group stage. The Azteca is a fortress where Mexico have never lost a World Cup match.

England needed two Harry Kane goals to come from behind against DR Congo in the Round of 32, and Thomas Tuchel has “big concerns” about his squad. The Three Lions have not convinced, but they have found ways to win. This will be their toughest test yet.

Spain vs TBD

Spain cruised past Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice. La Roja have been one of the most impressive teams in the tournament, combining technical excellence with clinical finishing.

Their opponent will be determined by the remaining Round of 32 matches. Whoever they face, Spain will be confident of advancing.

United States vs Belgium

The hosts face Belgium in what promises to be a fascinating encounter. The United States beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 and have home advantage at Lumen Field in Seattle.

Belgium needed a dramatic comeback to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time, with Youri Tielemans scoring twice including a controversial penalty. The Red Devils showed enormous character but also defensive vulnerability.

Two More Ties to Be Confirmed

The final two last-16 spots will be filled after the remaining Round of 32 matches. These games will take place on July 8 and 9 (WIB) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and BC Place in Vancouver.
