Tottenham Hotspur have agreed an £85m deal to sign Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United, beating Manchester United to one of the summer’s most sought-after players.
The Deal
The transfer fee is a guaranteed £85m with no add-ons — a significant investment from Spurs. Fernandes, just 21 years old, joined West Ham only last summer for £40m, meaning the Hammers are set to more than double their money in a single year.
The deal makes Fernandes one of the most expensive midfielders in Premier League history and signals Tottenham’s serious intent in the transfer market this summer.
Why Spurs Wanted Him
Tottenham identified Fernandes as a primary target after their £80m bid for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali was rejected. The Italian has four years left on his contract following an extension he signed to repay Newcastle’s faith during his 10-month ban for breaching betting rules.
With the Tonali deal proving difficult, Spurs moved quickly for Fernandes. His combination of youth, technical ability, and Premier League experience made him an ideal fit for the club’s long-term plans.
Manchester United Pull Out
Manchester United were also interested in Fernandes, with his agent Jorge Mendes speaking to both clubs. However, United decided not to match Tottenham’s offer.
The Red Devils are sticking to their policy of only signing players at what they consider the right valuation. Sources say United were not convinced Fernandes genuinely wanted to play at Old Trafford.
United’s priority remains central midfield, and they have already agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson. However, Ederson’s arrival has been delayed by a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.
Spurs’ Busy Summer
Fernandes becomes Tottenham’s fifth signing of the summer. The club has moved fast in the transfer window:
- Martin Dubravka — free transfer from Burnley (contract expires 1 July)
- Marcos Senesi — free transfer from Bournemouth
- Andy Robertson — free transfer from Liverpool
- Jan Paul van Hecke — £52m from Brighton
- Mateus Fernandes — £85m from West Ham
The mix of free transfers and big-money signings shows a smart recruitment strategy — strengthening the squad while investing heavily in key positions.
What Fernandes Brings
Despite West Ham suffering back-to-back Premier League relegations, Fernandes has been one of the most in-demand players this summer. His ability to control the midfield, pick passes, and contribute defensively has attracted interest from top clubs across Europe.
Paris Saint-Germain were also reportedly monitoring the situation, but Tottenham moved fastest to secure the deal.
What to Watch
Fernandes will be expected to slot straight into Tottenham’s midfield alongside their existing options. At 21, he has the potential to be a cornerstone of the Spurs midfield for years to come.
For West Ham, the £85m fee represents excellent business — they signed Fernandes for £40m and are selling for more than double. The money will be crucial as the club looks to rebuild following relegation.
The transfer also raises questions about Manchester United’s summer plans. With Fernandes going to Spurs and Ederson’s arrival delayed, United may need to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements before the window closes.
