Fulham have moved quickly to fill their managerial vacancy, appointing former Real Madrid interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

The 43-year-old Spaniard takes over from Marco Silva, who left Craven Cottage after five successful years to join Benfica.

Arbeloa’s Background

Arbeloa is best known for his playing career at Real Madrid and Liverpool. The former full-back represented some of Europe’s biggest clubs before moving into coaching.

He served as a youth coach at Real Madrid before being promoted to interim manager in January 2026 following the departure of Xabi Alonso. In charge for the final 28 games of the season, Arbeloa guided Madrid to a second-place finish in La Liga and a Champions League quarter-final exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Why Fulham Chose Arbeloa

Fulham chairman Shahid Khan praised Arbeloa’s ambition and philosophy. The Spaniard’s candidacy was backed by glowing references from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and new Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who Arbeloa played for at the Bernabeu.

“Alvaro is, by his own admission, very ambitious,” Khan said. “He has spent quality time around the best players, clubs and methods in the game, experiences which will serve him well here at Fulham.”

Khan also highlighted Arbeloa’s commitment to youth development and attacking football as key factors in the appointment.

The Silva Departure

Marco Silva’s exit came as a surprise to the Fulham board. Vice-chairman Tony Khan revealed last month that Silva had “indicated he wanted to stay” before ultimately “changing his mind” and accepting Benfica’s offer.

Thomas Frank, formerly of Tottenham and Brentford, was linked with the vacancy. Kieran McKenna, who left Ipswich, was also considered but deemed too expensive at a reported £8 million compensation fee plus salary costs.

Arbeloa’s Plans

Arbeloa is reportedly keen to bring several Real Madrid players with him to west London. Attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono, full-back Fran Garcia, and forward Gonzalo Garcia have all been linked with moves to Craven Cottage.

“It is a real honour for me to be embarking on this new stage at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London,” Arbeloa said. “I feel a great sense of responsibility and I’m deeply grateful to Mr Khan and Tony Khan for the trust they have placed in me.”

What to Watch

Fulham fans can expect an attacking approach under their new manager. Arbeloa’s links to Real Madrid could prove valuable in the transfer market, and his focus on developing young players aligns with the club’s long-term vision.

The big question is whether Arbeloa can maintain the stability Silva brought to Craven Cottage while adding his own attacking flair. Fulham’s pre-season preparations will be closely watched as the new era begins.
