Brighton and Hove Albion have agreed a club record £46m deal with Tottenham Hotspur for Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic. The fee could rise to £50m with additional performance-based payments.

The 19-year-old centre-back will undergo a medical once Croatia’s World Cup campaign comes to an end. Croatia face Portugal in a last-32 tie on Friday morning UK time.

Who Is Luka Vuskovic?

Vuskovic was born in Split, Croatia, and came through the academy at his local club Hajduk Split. He became the youngest player to feature in Croatia’s top flight at just 16 years old. He also went on to become Hajduk’s youngest goalscorer.

His rapid rise caught the attention of Tottenham Hotspur, who agreed a deal for him in September 2023. He officially joined the club in 2025 but has not yet made his Spurs debut.

Instead, Vuskovic spent last season on loan at Hamburg in Germany. He made 30 appearances in the Bundesliga and scored six goals — impressive numbers for a young central defender playing his first season in a top European league.

How the Deal Happened

Brighton had already seen two bids for Vuskovic rejected by Tottenham in June. The club clearly identified the Croatian as a top target and refused to give up.

Their persistence paid off. A third bid of £46m was accepted, with the deal also including potential add-ons that could push the total fee to £50m. That makes it Brighton’s most expensive signing in history.

A Swap Deal in Disguise?

The transfer is part of a wider exchange of defenders between the two clubs. Brighton’s current centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke is moving in the opposite direction to Tottenham. Spurs have agreed to pay £52m for the Netherlands international, who had just one year left on his Brighton contract.

So in effect, Brighton are replacing Van Hecke with a player six years younger who many consider one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe. It is a bold move from a club that has built its reputation on smart recruitment and player development.

What Vuskovic Brings to Brighton

At 19 years old and already capped six times by Croatia, Vuskovic has shown maturity beyond his years. He is comfortable on the ball, strong in the air, and has a knack for scoring goals from defence — his six Bundesliga goals at Hamburg are proof of that.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler will be getting a defender who can grow with the club. Vuskovic’s age means he fits perfectly into Brighton’s long-term vision of signing young talent and developing them into world-class players.

What to Watch

Vuskovic’s medical will take place once Croatia’s World Cup run ends. If he impresses against Portugal in the last 32, the fee could look even more like a bargain.

For Brighton, this signing signals serious ambition. For Tottenham, it shows they are willing to reshape their squad by selling young talent and bringing in proven Premier League defenders like Van Hecke. The start of the new Premier League season cannot come soon enough.
